1) Standard height and top unit (stability)
The standard IKEA PAX wardrobe height is 236.4 cm
If you want to go higher, you can extend by up to +35 cm. Once the total height reaches 271.4 cm, a separate top unit becomes mandatory – this ensures stability and prevents excessive strain on the hinges caused by the extra length of extended doors.
2) Maximum door height (panel length)
The length of a door panel is limited by the maximum size of the base panels we use to make them.
The maximum door height we can supply in one piece is therefore 275.6 cm.
3) When doors need to be split
Up to a total wardrobe height of 277.4 cm, one tall door per column is still possible.
Above 277.4 cm, the door must be split into two parts: a bottom door for the base wardrobe and a top door for the top unit.
4) Aesthetics & floor clearance
By default, we extend doors 5.2 cm downwards so the design runs neatly close to the floor.
This leaves about 1.8 cm clearance – enough to prevent scraping and to absorb small unevenness in the floor.
If you do not want this downward extension, it can be deselected in the configurator under the wardrobe options.
5) Absolute system limit
The maximum wardrobe height we support is around 399.4 cm (\~4 metres).
At this range we always work with multiple modules/top units, which means split door panels per segment.
Summary (key figures)
* Standard IKEA PAX: 236.4 cm
* Top unit required from: 271.4 cm total height
* Single-piece door possible up to: 277.4 cm wardrobe height
* Maximum single door size: 275.6 cm
* Standard downward extension: +5.2 cm → 1.8 cm floor clearance
* Maximum supported wardrobe height: \~399.4 cm
Tip: When measuring, always allow some clearance and check that your floor and ceiling are level enough.
Specifics for PAX 201 cm (low wardrobe)
The base height is ±201 cm. The rules for extending are essentially the same as above:
* Max. single-piece door: 275.6 cm
* Splitting required above wardrobe height: 277.4 cm (bottom door + top door/top unit)
* Standard downward extension: +5.2 cm → approx. 1.8 cm floor clearance
Practical advice (cost & stability)
Planning to go “tall” (say ≥ 240–250 cm final height)?
In most cases, it is more practical and cost-efficient to start with a 236 cm base wardrobe rather than extending the 201 cm version too much.
In short: choose the 201 cm base if your final height will stay relatively low; if you’re going higher, the 236 cm base is almost always the smarter and more economical choice.
